After working in wood industries in Knysna since 1943, Hertzog and Anna Kluyts started their own business, founding Kluyts & Co in 1962. The company prospered under their careful management, skilled craftsmanship and passion for excellence.

Today Kluyts & Co has larger premises near the N2 in Knysna where many of the original staff continue to teach the next generation of cabinetmakers. Hertzog's son, Theodore, is involved in operations, continuing the Kluyts family legacy.

Most of our craftsmen have been raised in the heart of Knysna’s cabinetmaking industries and have been with Kluyts & Co throughout their careers.

Our talented cabinetmakers are more than just passionate about handcrafting wood – they are multi-skilled wood-workers. While most cabinetmakers specialise in tasks, such as inlaying wood, carving or timber selection, our craftsmen have honed their diverse skills on our wide product range and can contribute to any step in the process.

While most of our timber is sourced locally from Knysna Forest we occasionally import timber for bespoke projects. We also import Karcher and Blum hinges and kitchen ironmongery and some handmade brass and steel door handles from the USA. As you would expect, we only use high quality fixtures and fittings in our products and specially toughened glass ** in our kitchens, cabinets and tables.

Depending upon your chosen finish, there different requirements for maintenance. We use German Osmo Wax on our finished furniture **(see link to Osmo.com) which seals the wood like a conventional varnish and also acts as an oil that penetrates deep into the wood.

We provide a traditional oiled finish, requiring weekly maintenance, or a varnished finish that only requires conventional polishing. Some of our European clients request that we French polish or shellac our furniture.
